How to Manage Stress in a Hectic Environment:  Yoga Techniques for Busy Women

Join DWEN as we learn how to manage stress in a hectic environment.  Lilah Westmoreland has been practicing and teaching yoga for fifteen years.  She holds an International Yoga Certificate IV and has completed more than 2000 hours of yoga teacher training and certification coursework.  Lilah also holds a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from Winthrop University, with a concentration in health and wellness.  Lilah’s approach to yoga centers on the therapeutic and meditative aspects of the practice, with an emphasis on individual needs and ability.

Our time with Lilah is designed to help you pinpoint the sources of stress in your everyday environment, identify which ones are creating negative outcomes, recognize how you respond to stress and learn how to manage those responses through breath work, mindfulness and physical techniques.

Yoga has been practiced for over 5000 years. Learn why it has persisted for so long and what it may have to offer you – without even having to take your shoes off.

Water For Life
Approximately 1.1 billion people in the world do not have access to clean water. The mission of Water of Life is to bring them hope…one village at a time.

Our January speaker will be Roland Bergeron, President and Executive Director, Water of Life.  Website: www.givefreshwater.org

A non-profit organization based in Greenville, South Carolina, Water of Life has been sending teams around the world since 2001. It was birthed out of a desire to see families receive much needed water in their town or community and to see hope develop among the people.

Water of Life mobilizes and equips those who want to help change the tragedy of bad water in other lands and provide hope to those people around the globe.  Many in West Africa have been forced to gather water from dirty ponds, swamps or streams or walk miles to find a clean water source. Connecting a group of people to a movement worth pursuing is like taking one pebble, casting it into the water and then encouraging others to cast their pebble, until, together they create a ripple that turns into a wave, carrying water and hope from here to Africa.

When you first meet Roland Bergeron, you will see immediately that Water of Life is not just about drilling water wells. It’s about an even higher purpose.  As President and Executive Director of Water of Life, Roland became interested in water missions back in 2001, when he went on his first mission trip with his Missions pastor at Brookwood Church. His heart was so stirred he continued to participate in multiple trips to Central America. Roland felt a call to action, and in 2003 he led a group of volunteers to found Water of Life.  In 2004, Roland made a life-changing trip to Liberia, West Africa. A devastated country, Liberia was reeling from 14 years of civil war, and physically and spiritually desperate. Roland has led over 50 trips to Liberia, Sierra Leone, Gambia, Guinea, India and Central America.

The fact that he’s an engineer by trade certainly comes in quite handy when drilling for water in third-world countries. He has also owned and managed his own homebuilding company, Bergeron Builders, and has been involved with numerous charities and boards, including Habitat for Humanity, Nurses for the Nations, the SC Home Builders Self Insurance Fund and the BB&T Upstate SC Advisory Board. Roland and his wife Jane have two children and five grandchildren.

Join us on January 10 to learn how Water of Life manages this amazing work around the world.

DWEN and Women Build for Habitat for Humanity

Join DWEN as Elizabeth Hall tells us more about Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build.

Women Build is Habitat’s volunteer program for women who want to learn construction skills and build homes and communities. They bring together women from all walks of life to address the housing crisis facing millions of women and children worldwide. Women Build events have helped to construct more than 1,900 houses.

In 2003 Elizabeth Hall began volunteering for Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build Project.  In 2005, the local affiliate asked Elizabeth to head up the project.  For the past 5 years Elizabeth has served as President of Women Build Greenville.  Her role includes raising funds, and coordinating the build.

Born in Chicago, Elizabeth spent most of her growing up years in San Mateo, CA.  In 1982 she earned an A.A. degree in Fashion Merchandising from the College of San Mateo and then in 1986 she earned a B.S. degree in Business Administration from California State University Sacramento.

In 1987, Elizabeth joined the staff of Campus Crusade for Christ International.  Since then Elizabeth has served in the following roles: assistant to the President’s wife; teaching personal ministry skills; coordinating conferences; writing; and video projects.  Currently, Elizabeth is a spiritual mentor for women and she coordinates events for Campus Crusade Greenville.

Elizabeth's hobbies include building Habitat houses, Jet Skiing, cooking, entertaining, camping, hiking, walking, playing cards and reading.

On April 9, 2011, Elizabeth married Louis Hall.

A Woman’s Journey

It’s not just about getting from A to B.  It’s about going the distance from A to Z.  As businesswomen, mothers, sisters, daughters, leaders, (and all the other hats we wear), it sometimes seems impossible to keep everything on track.  We are great at organizing others and making sure they are working towards goals, but what about ourselves?  Join us to discuss the journeys that women take – both figuratively and literally.

Part I The Financial Independence Journey:

Shanda Jeffries, Account Executive at Flynn Wealth Management Group, will do a short presentation entitled “A Woman’s Journey Toward Financial Independence.”

Shanda Jeffries has worked in the financial services industry since moving to Greenville in 2006. She has over 15 years of experience working with the public.  Her background includes serving as a children’s librarian and working in law enforcement.  As an Account Executive with a private wealth management group, her key responsibilities include working with companies and individual clients, marketing and public relations.  Shanda’s career choice was guided by the death of a family member, whose estate was unable to achieve all of the things the person wanted. “It was deeply disturbing to know that someone I cared about was not able to have the last thing she ever wanted on this earth,” says Shanda, “simply because she did not know what needed to be in place.”  Financial literacy is the cornerstone of Shanda’s career, as she is “on a mission” to educate as many people as she can.

Shanda is a registered volunteer for the American Red Cross, and participates in the annual MS Walk for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. She has also served on the Leadership Committee for the Blue Ridge Council of the Boy Scouts of America for the past 4 years, serves on the Steering Committee for the Meyer Center for Special Children’s Annual Kids’ Classic Golf Tournament, is on the Board of Directors of Defenders for Children, and is on the Sales Round Table Committee for the Greenville Chamber of Commerce.  She currently holds power lifting records in two states, and has 4 World Cup titles to her name for bench press, squat, dead lift, and overall total for woman ages 40-44. If you cannot find Shanda at the office or in a meeting, you might find her skating with the Greenville Derby Dames flat track roller derby team; her alter ego is known as “Rita Rollover.”

Part II Pack Lightly and Carry a Big Purse (includes demonstration):

Kristi Wetzel, founder & president of France by Design LLC, will share her secret for packing a stylish-yet-comfortable travel wardrobe in one small 22-inch suitcase

Kristi Wetzel, founder and president of France by Design LLC, is a Southern gal who is as fluent in French culture as she is in the French language. As a teenager, while studying the French language abroad, she fell in love with its people and culture. Fast forward a couple of decades to 1996 and after 12 years of teaching, Kristi was ready to become an entrepreneur. She founded her specialty travel company, France by Design, out of a desire to offer one-of-a kind itineraries that suit the interests, pace, and lifestyle of her individual clients.  She also wanted to give her clients enough cultural and language tips to enjoy exploring France on their own.

Kristi loves designing specialty-themed itineraries and small group tours that woo her clients back for new adventures. To add to her in-depth knowledge of France’s diverse regions, Kristi attained official recognition as a "France Destination Specialist" in July 2005 from The Travel Institute.

In recent years, Kristi has added Italy, Switzerland, and the UK to her repertoire.  Through research both online and on location, Kristi has also organized small group tours outside of France that focus on themes like the history and custom of British tea time, photography, art, genealogy, wine tastings, and gourmet cooking classes.

Let’s Talk…Success Secrets with Ruta Fox!

Ruta Fox, C.E.O and President of online jewelry retailer DivineDiamonds.com (http://www.divinediamonds.com) has relocated the business from New York City to Greenville, SC, and will share her success secrets with the ladies of DWEN!

The company sells diamond and 14 karat gold jewelry at affordable price points ($350) exclusively through their website.  She is the creator of The Ah Ring® the first and only diamond ring designed for single women – and one of Oprah’s O List super successful products.  Fox, a successful entrepreneur, chose Greenville because “the city is incredibly welcoming to new business ventures, yet has an eye on growth done in a responsible way.”  Born and raised in Los Angeles, Fox bemoans the way that cities like Los Angeles have become visually unappealing --- urban sprawl, clogged freeways, excessive signage and billboards. No one was watching out for the character of L.A. as it grew. It’s not like that here.”

While in Los Angeles, she co-created and edited the trendy lifestyle magazine Exposure, which was successfully sold to Fairchild Publications, publishers of Women’s Wear Daily. She moved to New York City and worked as Senior Copywriter at fashion-forward retailer Bloomingdale’s, and garnered free-lance editorial writing assignments from numerous magazines including Vanity Fair, Self, Health, Marie Claire and The LosAngeles Times Magazine.  With her background in advertising, branding, marketing, and public relations, she washired at Grey Global Group, the ad agency. She launched DivineDiamonds.com in 2001 after noticing no one in the jewelry business was focusing a product exclusively aimed atthe burgeoning and lucrative market segment of single women.  Fox created a diamond pinkie ring for single women, called it The Ah Ring, which stands for A, available and h,happy and the bauble landed on The O List in O, The Oprah Magazine.

Divinediamonds.com achieved sales of $1 million dollars the first year and Fox is credited with launching the “self-purchase” category of the jewelry industry -- women buying diamonds for themselves. She was named one of Fast Company magazine’s Fast 50 Trendsetters, and was featured in Entrepreneur magazine, in addition to hundreds of national and international media placements. She appeared on television on CNBC’s The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch.

With Keisha Kirkland

We all know Keisha Kirkland as a Weather Anchor for WYFF Channel 4 - NBC Affiliate in Greenville, SC. But we may not know the rest of her story.  A renaissance woman with a resume of accomplishments and accolades, Keisha's achievements encompass everything from academics and athletics to modeling and medicine. A native of Danville, KY, Keisha attended the University of Louisville and then went on to complete her Doctor of Chiropractic degree at Life University where she graduated with Cum Laude honors in 2000.  Her devoted spouse, Levon, is the wind beneath her wings and an 11-year veteran of the NFL (Pittsburgh Steelers).

Keisha is no stranger to life-threatening illnesses.  She discovered a Pituitary Macro adenoma during her senior year of chiropractic school. After several brain surgeries, temporary paralysis, and a painstaking recovery, Keisha beat the diagnosis. As if four brain surgeries were not enough, Keisha was confronted with an entirely new challenge when doctors noticed a mass in her right lung during a scan of her heart. Keisha, a healthy non-smoker, was diagnosed with stage 3A non-small cell lung cancer in 2008, she endured surgery and months of radiation and chemotherapy. Keisha is a survivor committed to helping others win the fight against lung cancer.

Keisha is spreading a message of hope, faith, and perseverance and tackling lung cancer one day at a time. She will talk with us on the importance of finding balance in life including health, prevention, and healing. Her hope is that someone hears her story and is inspired or encouraged through personal challenges.

Ashley is married and has two children, one with special needs.  As a mother she knew that “if she pursued a career it would have to be on her terms.”  So, after much badgering Ashley made the decision to start sharing her talent with others and found her dream job.  Ultimately, her clients dictate where she spends her time, and when she’s not with her family, she spends most of her time at local boutiques and shoe stores because she believes in supporting the local economy.  She edits her clients’ closets advising them on what to wear and when and to stretch their wardrobe by making multiple uses of the clothes they already own.

Ashley would like anyone who wants, to bring a piece of clothing to the meeting they want help with and have questions about.

A super networking luncheon for women will be held at the Hilton on Haywood Road, starting at noon. We’ll team up with a number of other women’s groups for this program.

Register on line at www.DWENGreenville.org – all attendees should register and pay the $16 member lunch charge.

We are very excited to have Jane Robelot as our guest speaker. Jane is a former network news anchor and reporter with nearly 20 years of experience as a journalist. Jane has agreed to share stories of her career and life experiences to show how it’s all led to what she is doing now (she and her husband Mario have their own production company CarolinaZoom Productions,) how they have chosen to live and raise their son George in the Upstate, and how they face the joys and tragedies that are all part of life. Jane even underwent heart surgery last year, and appeared on CBS just 3 weeks later to share the story of the technology that saved her life. She promises to relate some of her stories with the idea of giving women encouragement and inspiration.

Jane Robelot returned to her hometown of Greenville as a contributing reporter and anchor for special programs at WYFF in 2007.  She joined CBS in March 1995 as anchor of CBS Morning News. From August 1996 until June 1999 she anchored CBS This Morning. During her tenure at the network, Jane was awarded two national Emmys for journalistic excellence.  While at CBS, Robelot also served as a New York-based correspondent reporting for various CBS News broadcasts, covering some of the most important news events of that time, including the Oklahoma City bombing and the death of Princess Diana, and Pope John Paul II’s historic visit to Cuba.

Jane is a graduate of Clemson University. She is married to Mario De Carvalho, whom she met when he was a cameraman with CBS News.

Preparedness Information – When It's Needed Most – NOW!

Disaster can strike quickly and without warning. It can force you to evacuate your neighborhood, workplace or school or can confine you to your home. What would you do if basic services – water, gas, electricity or telephones – were cut off?  Local officials and relief workers will be on the scene after a disaster, but they cannot reach everyone right away.  The best way to make you and your family and place of employment safer is to be prepared before disaster strikes.

Get the facts you need — before, during, and after a disaster or emergency situation.  As the nation's preeminent preparedness and safety training organization, the American Red Cross has developed emergency-specific checklists using the latest research, science, best practices and expert opinion.

Tanya B. Carter, LMSW, Director of Community Preparedness, A Partnership between the American Red Cross & the Greenville County Office of Emergency Management, will share information on both business and individual preparedness. We also asked Tanya to provide an update on relief and restoration efforts in Haiti.

Each attendee will receive a Red Cross backpack and will learn how to fill it with the most important emergency-related items that can be stored in advance and ready when needed. Learn where to go and what to do in response to different types of emergencies and disasters.

With tax time fast approaching, there are always changes in the tax laws (and in our lives, sometimes) that make this year different.

We asked Gary to talk about LLC's, individual corporations, and personal tax accounting to give us some ideas about the differences and benefits of operating under each classification. Whether you own your own business or are considering a new business or new employment opportunity, there are aspects of each which you should consider.

Gary serves as an associate with George N. Love, CPA. He works closely with clients as a business adviser in the areas of tax, accounting services and financial consulting. He is a graduate of Anderson University with a BSBA - Accounting and a BSBA - Computer Information Systems as well as an MBA from the University of South Carolina. llyn strong: Jeweler with an Eye for Life

Come hear her success story and learn about the unique path that brought llyn strong to the life she lives today as an artist and downtown resident and business owner.

llyn strong is a local artist with more than a unique way of spelling her name to make a person sit up and take notice. The award-winning artist designs and creates jewelry as a way of life that, she explains, is more than just creating pieces with which others may adorn themselves.

Always a creative thinker, llyn made her first piece of jewelry in 1972. At first thinking she would be a painter or maybe a graphic designer, llyn said jewelry did not enter her life until her sophomore year in college. Now, having taken that path for over 30 years, she opened her first store in 1989 and moved to her current location in downtown Greenville, in 1992.

"One of the greatest feelings is when you believe the jewelry you created could one day become a treasured family heirloom and that customer feels you have helped them select the perfect gift," llyn said.

These days, llyn works six days a week, two of those in her studio. Thanks to a renovation of the space above her shop, the walk home is not a long one. The tale of the amazing home that she designed and had built above her store is an epic! It is truly a showcase and a comfortable home.

From an artist who describes herself as "very shy," we can look forward to eye-opening message about determination, inspiration, and smart business decisions that have guided llyn over the years. Greenville is lucky to have so much talent right downtown, and we're sure to see her recognizable style growing and changing - as she says, "just like life itself."

Breast Cancer Awareness

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Since the program began in 1985, mammography rates have more than doubled for women age 50 and older and breast cancer deaths have declined. This is exciting progress, but there are still women who do not take advantage of early detection at all and others who do not get screening mammograms and clinical breast exams at regular intervals.

Our speaker, Dr. Paige Huber is a Radiologist at Upstate Imaging Specialists, PA who specializes in Women's Imaging. She is very passionate about Breast Cancer and strives to teach women the importance of early diagnosis and knowing all the options a patient has for treatment. Dr. Huber is originally from Florence, South Carolina and attended College of Charleston for her undergrad, Medical University of SC for medical school and did her residency training at University of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. She has been performing breast MRI for six years and enjoys educating the community on the benefits as well as understanding where it fits in the diagnosis. We welcome her and appreciate her expertise in our community.

Basic Legal Advice for You and Your Family

The best time to consult with an attorney may be when you think you do not need one!

The law affects so many aspects of our lives and many of us do not know the steps toward best protecting and providing for ourselves and our families. While many of us may spend the rest of our lives without needing a criminal attorney, most of us, at one time or another, will use a civil attorney. What should you do to be prepared for the future and to know when to call on an attorney for assistance?

Attorney Ryan Brown will give us some basic information on the need for wills, powers of attorney, and other legal documents. Bring your questions about other aspects of the law that affect our daily lives. How about some of those touchy real estate issues that can arise when things do not go just as we planned or expected? What if your neighbor builds a fence across the corner of your property? What if you do not get a new survey performed when you purchase a home and then the county comes in and says the proposed widening of the street will come across your new patio or take out the $300 in new shrubs you just planted? What can you do? How could these problems have been avoided? How can they be resolved? Who can attach a lien to your property and how can you get it removed? Does it matter?

For the answers to these questions and others that pertain to our homes, our families, and our finances, join us Tuesday, June 9.

Speaker: Greenville Attorney P. Ryan Brown

A native of Greenville, Ryan received his undergraduate degree from Presbyterian College in 1995 where he was a member of Order of the Omega and his Juris Doctorate from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1999. He is a member of the South Carolina Bar and its Real Estate Practice Section, the Greenville County Bar, and an Affiliate Member of the Greater Greenville Association of Realtors. Ryan is a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
